Natural materials

Our Woolcool products use sustainable, compostable, recyclable or recycled materials.

Wool is one of the most sustainable natural materials, being available in abundance as a by-product of rearing sheep.

Woolcool offers significant benefits for complying with UK government and EU requirements, including the European Commission’s guidelines for the distribution of perishable products, Packaging Essential Requirement Regulations, Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) and businesses’ Duty of Care.

Meet your commitments

Woolcool insulated packaging products help companies and consumers reduce, re-use and recycle packaging as set out by the Government and following guidelines by WRAP (Waste & Resource Action Programme).

The wool insulation is totally compostable and biodegradable, releasing valuable nitrates back into the soil.

The HDPE film used to enclose the felt and the HDPE envelopes used for Woolcool pouches are recyclable through Soft Plastics NZ and commercial recycling services. Always check with your commercial recycling provider if HDPE soft plastics are accepted at their depot. The cardboard delivery boxes are produced using recycled material and are recyclable at local authority waste depots.

In most cases Woolcool products are suitable to be re-used several times, and at the end of its useful life as packaging, the insulation liners or felted wool can be re-used for a variety of purposes.

Making a difference

Since 2009, more than 500 tonnes of non-biodegradable plastic packaging waste has been saved from landfill by UK customers switching to Woolcool. Within the last year we have used approximately 250,000 fleeces… that’s a lot of sheep.

Woolcool flat packed products offer massive logistical and transportation benefits, for businesses and the environment – 6000 units of Woolcool can be delivered in just 1x40ft lorry in contrast to 4x40ft lorries for the equivalent conventional products.

Environmentally managed

Wool is sourced and processed specifically for making Woolcool to ensure it doesn’t contain additives, such as borate or polyester, found in other types of wool insulation.

Woolcool fleeces are washed and scoured in accordance with PPC regulations and ISO14001 environmental management systems, without the need for extreme temperatures, chemical treatments or additives. Beneficial by-products of the washing and scouring process include a nitrate and mineral rich sludge which is used as natural fertiliser or made into biodegradable slug pellets. The washed fleece is garneted, needle-felted and cut into strips which are hygienically sealed within recyclable PE film with micro-perforations to allow the hygroscopic function.
